Today I stopped off at my local Rock n Road to pick up some knee protection for the Snow Summit Downhill Extravaganza this weekend. This isn’s strictly necessary but given my propensity for bleeding when I mountain bike I figured it was a good idea.
I was glad to discover two different models on clearance and snagged them both for less than the cost of a single new pair. SWEET!!

What is the most annoying sound in the world? When you are having a good race with only about a mile to go it is a hissing sound coming from your back tire. More on that in a minute…

What a great time! This was my first ever bicycle race and I set out with the goal of finishing. Much to my surprise, I not only finished but managed to not be last!!
I got to Irvine Lake around 4:15. Parked, suited up, and headed over to the registration area. If you decide to come out and race, get there by 4 to register. This will give you plenty of time to pre-ride the course before the race begins.
The pre-ride was good. Some interesting sharp turns at the end of a few downhills where a mistake means you end up in the lake! Glad I saw those before attacking at my blistering race pace.
Pre-race meeting at the starting line followed by mass confusion as people tried to que up in the appropriate order. Hey race organizers, how about you use the huge open space just before the gates to pre-queue the groups. Just a thought.
Beginner 2 group finally at the line… and… were off! Jamming hard on the cranks, go to shift into the big ring and BANG! Chain is jammed and front D is all twisted. 100 yards from the start and already stopped with a mechanical! “FFFFFUUUUUDDDDGGGGEEEEEEE”, only I didnt say fudge.
